Today, I’m delighted to introduce Hiroko Fukawa @hirokofukawaquilts Enjoy this talented artist I am a quilter living in Connecticut. After graduating from the graphic design department of an art university in Japan and working as a graphic designer, I moved to the United States and started self-taught quilting while raising my four children. After that, I studied under Emiko Loeb for several years and participated in her exhibitions twice. At that time, I learned from her how to create my own modern designs based on classic quilt patterns, which are still the basis of my quilting.

I’ve been making baby quilts and accessories for a while.
When the world was locked down due to the pandemic in 2020, I started making wall quilts again. The theme is “Memory of Water”
I was impressed by the fact that water is a mysterious substance that remembers people’s emotions and all events on Earth. I encountered the mysterious ancient Japanese character Katakamuna from 12,000 years ago, and I create quilts by combining “water as a memory device” and poetry in the ancient character Katakamuna. In Katakamuna, the shape means water. I am still fascinated by the shape .

The process of varying the orange peel patterns to express water, light, various natural elements, my memories and my world in quilts is a very exciting one.

The finishing touch, the process of embroidering Katakamuna characters and expressing light with bead stitching is my favorite step and it is limitless

I am a fiber artist based in Denver, Colorado, with a lifelong love of creating. My artistic journey began with pencil drawings and paintings, later expanding to digital art. My relationship with sewing is deeply intertwined with my memories of my father, Juan, and his mother, Isabel. My dad tried to teach me how to mend clothes and hem dresses, while Isabel introduced me to hand-embroidery.
Though I wasn’t particularly skilled at either—and didn’t always enjoy the activities—I cherished the time spent with them and the sense of connection their guidance provided.
I discovered quilting about a decade ago, shortly after my father passed away.

Seeking a way to remain connected with his memory (while avoiding garment sewing), I began with machine-piecing quilts. Over time, my desire for greater creative control led me back to hand-sewing, where I could fully realize my designs.

For me, drawing is a way to process emotions and untangle my thoughts. These sketches and paintings serve as the foundation for my textile art, where I recreate my drawn designs in fabric. I love the challenge of creating depth through use of color, and the tactile process of solving complex piecing while keeping each element intact. My recent work explores the interplay between geometric structures and organic forms, reflecting the intersection of personal, subjective experiences with a sense of order and logic.

Born in Berlin in 1899, she aspired to be a painter, but in 1922 she discovered the Bauhaus school in Weimar and was immediately drawn to this institution, which sparked a creative revolution in architecture and design while also encouraging women to participate. However, it later grouped them into classes focused on weaving, ceramics, and bookbinding. There, she also met Josef Albers, whom she married in 1924.

At the Bauhaus, Anni Albers worked as an assistant to professor Gunta Stölzl and served as acting director of the textile workshop on several occasions between 1929 and 1931. When the Bauhaus was shut down by the Nazi Party in 1933, the Albers moved to North Carolina, USA, where both were hired as faculty at a newly established liberal arts school that would become a cornerstone of American modernity, the Black Mountain College.

Although her goal was never to weave garments, the fashion world has consistently paid tribute to her. Publications and exhibitions dedicated to her work (such as the book Women Design by Libby Sellers or the exhibition held by the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in late 2018) have finally returned Anni Albers to her rightful place: the creative core of the modernist movement.
