I didn’t grow up in a “quilty” or crafty family, but creativity has always been part of my life. My father, now 98 years old, is an architectural illustrator, and he introduced me to the beauty of design. Together, we explored colors, shapes, and the interplay of elements, sparking a lifelong fascination with visual storytelling.
I studied at Art Center College of Design and pursued a career as an art director, honing my eye for composition and detail. Later, I made the unconventional leap to medical school, driven by a desire to connect with people in meaningful ways. My global travels and work as a physician, especially in marginalized communities, have deeply inspired my art. The stories I’ve encountered, both literal and metaphorical, now take shape in my quilts.
My quilts reflect my love of bold, graphic forms. While intricate piecing doesn’t suit my style, I’m drawn to the power of large shapes and how they interact. Working on a larger scale allows me to experiment freely with stitching techniques and to create pieces that feel both modern and expressive.

Today, I’m delighted to introduce Alison Hamby @inthelightquilts

I am Alison, the maker behind In the Light Quilts. I was born and raised in Southwest Missouri where I live with my husband and 2 young children.The thrill of making and creating is something that I have enjoyed since I was very young. Many of my earliest memories include playing with various craft supplies, hand sewing scraps together with my grandma, taking pottery and drawing classes, etc. My dad bought me my own sewing machine for Christmas when I was 12 (I will never forget how excited I was!) and I made tons of pillows and curtains but lost interest in making anything more “complicated” because I just didn’t have the patience to measure and follow patterns. In 2019 I quit my teaching job to stay at home with my first baby and rediscovered my love of making and creating. A few months into becoming a mom, I was feeling the itch to make something and I stumbled upon quilting on Instagram. The big, bold, modern designs drew me in instantly, I just had to make one! Thanks to Youtube, blogs, and online quilting classes I made as many quilts as I could from as many different designers as I could find time for. Taking small pieces of fabric and turning them into beautiful designs felt like magic. Using my hands to make order out of chaos, turning small pieces of fabric into beautiful designs, gave me a chance to pray and clear my mind, which I was especially in need of as a new, nervous mom. In 2021, I started writing my own patterns and it has been so rewarding. Seeing others take my patterns and make their own version really gives me so much joy. It never gets old! I would describe my style as “big block” and tend to take traditional shapes and blocks and make them more simplified or modern. The fabrics I usually use are pinks, purples, browns, oranges, and greens. I hope to honor the rich history of quilting and quilt design while making cheerful and inviting quilts and patterns to inspire others to make their own!

I am Mansooreh Baghgaraee. I live in Iran.

I began my career as a ceramic artist, then gradually, I started combining ceramics with texture art. At one point, I discovered that texture arts and embroidery better conveyed my main ideas about women’s concerns. I’d learned embroidery in school and my mom used to do embroidery. In 2022’s Woman, life, Freedom Movement, many women cut their hair in objection to the government’s response to their demands. I asked them to send me their cut hair for my artwork. I got a great response and from then I concentrated on using hair embroidery as my technique. Embroidery and hair are always seen as ordinary and marginal things. So, they are the best things to convey women’s concerns which are always marginalized as ordinary and unimportant subjects. But these concerns belong to fifty percent of human beings so could not be unimportant and ordinary. Maybe there are differences between societies but the main concern is still the same: women’s empowerment. I am trying to bring marginalized concerns of women to the center by using marginalized materials
