I began sewing in my early twenties as a creative outlet. Initially, I focused on
making children’s clothing, but I became intrigued with quilting when I was
introduced to modern, minimalist designs. With little quilting knowledge, I
learned piecing through improv, trial and error, and of course, youtube. Once I
started with quilting, I was hooked and couldn’t stop.
At the same time I was learning quilting, a book on natural dyeing caught my
attention. I began looking to nature to help me create a palette of colors that
would connect my love of sewing with my desire to spend my days outside. At
the time, few resources existed to teach the steps of natural dyeing. It took me
years of reading, learning, and experimenting to perfect natural dyeing. Over
time, I widened my naturally dyed color palette to a rainbow of colors, but I still
use a mix of natural dyes and store-bought fabrics in my quilts.
Nature and its elements inspire my designs and spark my creativity. I desire to
create quilts with soothing color palettes that are interesting, yet not complex.
My quilts should catch your eye while also lacking clutter. Ideally, the finished
quilt should complement your home and become a well-loved piece for your
family.
My love of sewing along with my background in education has led me to my
current pursuits of creating patterns and natural dye education and kits to make
anyone and everyone a fiber enthusiast. I believe everyone benefits from
creative outlets in life, so I hope I can encourage and guide others to expand
their creativity.

I’m happy to introduce today Leah Evans @leahevanstextiles

In 2003 I graduated with a BFA in textile design from the University of Kansas and I am
currently working out of my studio in Madison, Wisconsin. I particularly like using discarded
textiles because working with “trash” takes away the preciousness of a material. I can take
risks and experiment while also feeling like I am keeping something out of a landfill. I also
enjoy the meditative, slow work of sourcing and deconstructing used garments. With fabrics
gleaned from thrift stores, garage sales, upholstery remnants, and cast offs from family and
friends, my work is in keeping with the quilting tradition of recycling.
My work consists of layers of the following techniques: appliqué, reverse appliqué, piecing,
natural and synthetic dyeing, and a variety of embroidery stitches. I resist the use a
computer or imaging software in my work. Because of this the pieces capture the
spontaneity of a hand sketch – although the process of transferring a drawing by hand to the
fabric is laborious and time consuming. There is also an overall balance between hand and
machine work.
My current thematic focus is the ways in which people impact their environment and in turn,
how the environment affects people. The quilted wall hangings are influenced by aerial
photography, maps, and satellite imagery, and are often based on specific places. Resource
extraction, agriculture, and water use are frequent subjects, and are meant as visual
reminders of the changes we create in the land. Similarly, components of my work
demonstrate the influence of nature on our constructs. The quilts address themes of rivers
changing course and shifting property divisions, lava flows breaching residential
developments, and changing coastlines caused by climate change. This environmental
history perspective helps me process my emotions and engage others in a discussion about
where we are as a society.
