My current work explores emergence resulting from using plant growth algorithms to create handwoven woven artworks. I always want to push the idea of what weaving and fabric can be, and how I can articulate my ideas through woven forms. Through my work I aim to merge interdisciplinary elements of art, craft, design, science and technology.

I grew up surrounded by textiles, on an angora goat farm and later in my mother’s yarn spinning factory. I learned to weave when I was about 4 years old and given the opportunity to learn following my own creative direction. This led me to study jacquard weaving in Italy when I was 18, before I started my BA.

I’ve always been a self-directed learner – every piece of work produces more questions to explore.

My current work questions how to understand complex natural systems, how human technology creates the ‘artificial’ and how we might understand our connections to these through hybridized art forms. By exploring this idea using woven emergence, I input plant modelling code directly into the cloth with relatively little control over where the structural changes occur – they may form a pattern or a random form.

Materiality is an important part of my practice as a way of conveying knowledge, to drive reflection and conceptual consideration. I often work with active and reactive materials, as well as inactive, to create a personal relationship with the viewer. These have included fibre optic, reflective, and shape-memory alloys along with paper and wires.

During my art studies, a professor and artist that I really like, Monique Regimbald Zeiber, told me that to be a good artist, you had to be a good “liar”. She wanted me to understand the idea of “making believe”, of infusing “magic” into the work. In a certain sense, my process is a trickery, a lure, a strategy: I have never sewn in my life, nor have I ever worked with fabric. I pretend. I imitate. I invent an intermediary between paper and fabric. I make paper patchworks. My collages are so delicate and camouflaged by cut-outs and patterns that they are almost on the edge of the collage tradition.

Fabrics inhabit my childhood and my imagination. They refer to games, to cabins on the couch with tablecloths and blankets, to improvised disguises, to the comfort of a soft toy or a warm blanket. I remember the summer light filtering through the curtains of the house, in lace or patterned. My mother did sewing, like many women of her time, and her mother too. I watched her do it, fascinated. It was her thing, and she was good at it and she still is. Probably if my artistic process was not so slow and similar to weaving, embroidering or other slow and meticulous manual work, I would learn to sew and work with fabric.

Today, I’m pleased to introduce Jill Slipper Scholtz @slipperscholtz Enjoy this artist’s work and story!
My grandmother taught me how to sew fifty-five years ago. She was a quilter and sewist and used to sew parachutes during WWII. I began quilting thirty years ago and enjoy experimenting with many different aspects of quilting design and technique. About 10 years ago I began exploring the world of modern quilting. Playing with color is my favorite part of quilting. I also find myself drawn to using repurposed materials and improvisational piecing. Images in nature and space inspire me.

Quilting is a meditative practice that brings me hope. As an attorney, mediator and racial equity advocate, I am keenly aware of the systemic and institutional inequities that plague our society. I am often working to help resolve conflict and restore harm, and quilting has become a liberating means of expressing my emotions and bringing myself a sense of calm. Sometimes my quilts express my feelings with more artistic images. Other times, the practice of improvisational piecing shape and color with no design in mind will feed my soul. I recently began acrylic painting as well. I am excited about the idea of merging different art forms in the future.
