My name is Petra and I live in Wuppertal, Germany. Before I discovered the world of quilting, I used to sew clothes for
me and my children. Approximately 10 years ago I started sewing my very first quilts after having been inspired by some
traditional quilts on a trip through British Columbia, Canada. Initially, I explored traditional patterns and piecing
techniques, learning the foundations of the craft. But over time I realized that improv piecing attracted me most, offering
a sense of great freedom, experimentation and endless creative possibilities. My approach to quilting is minimalistic and
abstract, characterized by using neutral and muted color palettes, clear geometric shapes and often the use of negative
space, allowing the composition to breathe. Primarily I work with solids and often with repurposed clothes, finding my
inspiration in architecture, art, nature and science as well. Usually I work with a design wall which helps me to visualize
and arrange blocks, shapes and lines into a harmonious overall picture. The design process itself is an intuitive flow and
I often forget time and space. The whole process from start to finish fills my heart with so much joy! I also really like
group projects: last year I founded a small improv bee (#BEEoffthecuff) with 6 other German quilters. It can be
challenging to arrange all the different blocks to a cohesive design, but I like it a lot. There is also another small group of
creative women where I am a member of (#buchquiltfrauen). We use novels as our inspiration and transform them into
individual mini quilts. For me, improv quilting has become the perfect medium to express creativity, emotion and design.
I really enjoy the tactile experience of fabric, appreciating the texture and haptics that emerge throughout the process. I
feel incredibly fortunate to have discovered this fulfilling art form.

Today, I’m delighted to introduce Judy Coates Perez @judycoatesperez

I consider myself a mixed media textile artist and have been creating for as long as I can remember. With a background in graphic design and a lifetime of self-directed learning in textiles. For over 30 years, I focused on art quilts,
starting each piece with white fabric that I transformed through painting or dyeing. Along the way, I often incorporated printmaking techniques such as
stamping and screen printing, as well as elements of collage. These explorations have allowed me to merge diverse methods and materials, creating richly layered and uniquely expressive works.
That said, I’ve never met an art technique I didn’t like. I’m driven by a passion for experimentation, exploring new methods, and pushing boundaries to create
unique artwork.
In 2020, my textile work made a dramatic shift as I turned to hand stitching on linen to cope with the stresses of the pandemic and the political discord in
America. Over the past five years, stitching has become a near-daily practice, rooted in active meditation, improvisation and exploration.
Each piece begins with a concept or subject I want to delve into, followed by selecting a palette of embroidery floss that reflects the idea. Using chalk or wax pencils, I sketch the design incrementally onto black linen as I work. The
process is entirely intuitive—I never know what the final design will look like when I start.
My goal is to remain fully present in the act of creation, allowing the process to guide me and the end result to surprise me. This improvisational approach
keeps me deeply engaged from the first stitch to the last.

My current work explores emergence resulting from using plant growth algorithms to create handwoven woven artworks. I always want to push the idea of what weaving and fabric can be, and how I can articulate my ideas through woven forms. Through my work I aim to merge interdisciplinary elements of art, craft, design, science and technology.

I grew up surrounded by textiles, on an angora goat farm and later in my mother’s yarn spinning factory. I learned to weave when I was about 4 years old and given the opportunity to learn following my own creative direction. This led me to study jacquard weaving in Italy when I was 18, before I started my BA.

I’ve always been a self-directed learner – every piece of work produces more questions to explore.

My current work questions how to understand complex natural systems, how human technology creates the ‘artificial’ and how we might understand our connections to these through hybridized art forms. By exploring this idea using woven emergence, I input plant modelling code directly into the cloth with relatively little control over where the structural changes occur – they may form a pattern or a random form.

Materiality is an important part of my practice as a way of conveying knowledge, to drive reflection and conceptual consideration. I often work with active and reactive materials, as well as inactive, to create a personal relationship with the viewer. These have included fibre optic, reflective, and shape-memory alloys along with paper and wires.
